Outside Camping - High Step Position
Words I Like - “Stay in an offensive cycle.”
Outlier Mat Minute: Outside Camping - High Step Position
When we’re outside camping and their near leg drops from behind our hip down to our shin, we risk them reconnecting to our trail leg. If they connect to our trail leg, here are some options:
Chest to Chest Half Guard: Transition from loose to tight passing, made famous by John Danaher and the New Wave team.
High Step Transition: Switch into high step passing to free your trapped leg and get right back to outside camping.
High Step Details: When high stepping, I like taking a cross lat post (like Jozef did above) or a cross grip on their wrist.
As promised, jiu-jitsu insights in under 1 minute!
P.S. As the guard passer, I find the high step position great for staying in an offensive cycle and continuing to keep the guard player on the defensive. You can search #highstep on the Outlier Database for more study material.
