Outlier Mat Minute: Half Guard Funnel
Right now, the data on the Outlier Database shows that half guard is where most guard passes start. So as the passer, it helps to funnel the guard player into half guard.
#dlrpass + #gripbreak - When trying to switch from DLR into half guard, we need to break their grips on our ankle and behind our knee. To do this, take a grip on both their wrists. To break the grip on our ankle, we straighten our leg as we pull their wrist up. To break the grip behind our knee we push their wrist down so we can switch from DLR into half guard.
#rdlrpass + #gripbreak - When forcing the guard player from RDLR into half guard, we can drive our knee to the mat to break their grip on our ankle.
#lessimpressedmoreinvolvedbjj - I discuss this as being part of our competition strategy in this YouTube video here.
The guard comes in layers. By moving the guard player from DLR or RDLR into half guard, you’re peeling those layers away and guiding them toward the position where most passes happen.
As promised, jiu jitsu insights in under 1 minute!
