Outlier Mat Minute: External vs Internal Rotation
Using external and internal rotation is key to destabilize our opponent. Here is how:
Internal vs External rotation: If your partner defends internal rotation with a back step, stay on the attack by switching to external rotation. If they square up to stop external rotation, attack with internal rotation instead.
Destabilization: A simple way to apply this concept is by destabilizing your opponent. You can combine external and internal rotation to grab your opponent’s secondary leg making it easier to break their balance.
Smashed Leg Entanglement: When we are being smashed from a position like cross ashi, we play the dilemma between a face roll (external rotation) or an inside spin (internal rotation) to destabilize our opponent.
