Outlier Mat Minute: Dealing with the Weave Guard Pass
A visitor recently came to our gym and settled into a strong weave guard passing position. I struggled to get anything going. I went home, hopped on the Outlier Database, and found some ideas to solve this problem. Here’s what I’m going to try:
Arm Drag – An attack on the weave arm that works best when their head and weight are back.
Choi Bar – To defend our attack on their weave arm, the passer’s weight comes forward. When their weight comes forward, they will often look to anchor themselves to our head with their free hand which can set up Choi bar opportunities.
Keymaster – If their weight is forward and their far foot is posted, free your trapped foot and start attacking.
Knee Lever – If their weight is forward and they’re on both knees, use a knee lever.
A key weakness of the weave is their inability to post with the weave arm. The goal is to shift their weight forward and onto the near side so we can exploit that weakness.
As promised, jiu-jitsu insights in under 1 minute!
