Outlier Mat Minute: Creating Extension from Mount
Congratulations — you made it to mount! Now the real work starts: extending the defender’s arm away from their body so we can attack.
#mount + #underhook - In an ideal world, we slide our elbow to theirs and ratchet their arm up into a single chest wrap.
#mount + #isolation - When it’s hard to get elbow-to-elbow, first grab their elbow with your hand. Then slide your knee up and hand off control of their elbow to your leg. Now you can get the control you want: elbow to elbow.
#mount + #wristpin - Keeping your knee in their armpit lowers your risk. If your first attempt fails, their elbow can’t fully return to their ribs. With your leg controlling their elbow, you can either chase elbow-to-elbow (Gordon example above) or pin their wrist to the mat.
Handing off elbow control from one part of your body to another is a reliable way to isolate the defender’s arm from mount.
As promised, jiu jitsu insights in under 1 minute!
