Outlier Mat Minute: Connection Concepts from Seated Open Guard
The hardest part about open guard is making a good connection to the guard passer. Here are some simple concepts that have made me much more confident in my guard:
#seatedopenguard + #connection + #forwardhipescape - Put one foot on the mat and extend the other. Pull the passer forward as you slide your hips in. Think of it like a forward hip escape. This motion helps you make tight connection to start attacking.
Limit their options - The passer has the edge if they can move freely. As the guard player, we want to limit some of their options to make them more predictable. We can do this through movement and using our feet.
Type of Connection - By connecting with your feet on the outside, you set up a structured guard that is more difficult to pass.
As promised, jiu-jitsu insights in under 1 minute!
P.S. You can search #openguard along with #connection on the Outlier Database to find more examples of how to build connection from open guard.
